According to Wikipedia, The Mahabharata is an epic poem in the Sanskrit language. Consisting of over 100,000 verses and 700 chapters, it tells the story of conflict between two groups of cousins: the Pandavas and the Kauravas. The Mahabharata comprises hundreds of books with broad subject matter such as Dharma (sacred duties) or Artha (material wealth). It also discusses philosophical concepts such as karma and dharma. One great feature that makes The Mahabharata a distinguished work is its emphasis on values and cultural norms set by a governing system called dharma. While the Bhagavad Gita emphasizes dharma in terms of personal choices, the Mahabharata presents dharma in different aspects of life.Over thousands of years, The Mahabharata has developed into a masterpiece that enriches India's cultural heritage. It is one of the two great epics of India, the other being Rāmāyaṇa.Adi Parva is the first book dealing with the story of Mahabharata. The beginning chapters describe how to go about reclaiming king Bharata's kingdom, then discusses philosophy and morals to serve as guidelines for life. Book I begins with a prologue that relates the story of the Mahabharata war. After recounting the creation of universe, it discusses various problems that are overcome during creation, then describes how gods live on Mt. Kailasa. It also relates texts of Veda. The text tells about how Dhritarashtra became king following the death of his father Pandu and brother Vidurāchārya who is mentioned in Gita. About 500 verses are devoted to describing Bhishma's loneliness due to his strict adherence to dharma. These chapters also describe various types of morality and describes how Bhishma lived in pursuit of Dharma without focusing on worldly pleasures. Then the book introduces the Pandavas and their mother Kunti. This ends with a promise that an appropriate ending will be provided later. This is the second book of Mahabharata, contains about 500 verses. It starts with a promise which says that an appropriate ending will be provided for this book too after 500 verses. The beginning of the book is identical to first adi parva, but ends with coronation of Bhishma as King after death of Vidura. According to Pandava Sahadeva, his brother Nakula had been away from their camp on personal business when he was attacked by Jayadratha. Nakula had been injured in the attack, but had killed Jayadratha. Hearing this, Bhishma advises the Pandavas to leave for Indraprastha immediately. In this book, Bhishma concludes his education of Arjuna and his brothers by providing them with lessons on weapons and battle formations. The objective of education was to convey a message that a person who is trained in the art of war, how to protect others from harm using weapons and knowledge about various battle formations can be a king. Bhishma also reveals what he considers to be the four key virtues essential for a king: generosity, self-control, wisdom and compassion.
